Carpal tunnel syndrome is an injury caused by repetitive movement like typing, but it can be caused by any consistent movement involving the wrist. This movement, when done constantly or very consistently, will cause too much pressure on the median nerve. The median nerve is the most important nerve for the entire wrist area, and it is responsible for directing the movement and sensation in all fingers except the pinky. This means that pain can develop not only in the wrist, where the median nerve is, but also down to the fingers or all the way up to the elbow or even shoulder.
Fingers often feel numb in patients suffering from carpal tunnel. The hands and fingers may also have an uncomfortable tingling feeling. People who suffer from carpal tunnel often find that they can’t grip items normally without pain. Shooting pain is a common symptom, with the pain traveling from the wrist all the way up the arm. Some people experience such severe pain from carpal tunnel during the night that they can’t sleep properly.
Women appear to be more likely than men to have carpal tunnel pain. Anyone who works with their hands and wrists daily is more susceptible to developing carpal tunnel pain. People who work at the computer all day, those who work on assembly lines, and people who use small intricate tools in their work are more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. It appears that carpal tunnel syndrome may appear more often in people with health issues like obesity, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.
The chiropractor can help with carpal tunnel pain by performing upper spine alignments, which can resolve issues like trapped nerves. Inflammation and pain can be reduced with treatments like cryotherapy and ultrasound therapy. The chiropractor may also recommend lifestyle modifications like wearing a wrist splint at night to help stabilize the wrist and aid in healing.
