What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractors treat a wide variety of patients with many different health conditions and concerns. Doctors of chiropractic are particularly known for their extensive knowledge of the way the spine impacts the rest of the body. They often treat back pain, neck pain, whiplash, migraine headaches, carpal tunnel, shoulder pain and many musculoskeletal system injuries and disorders. Chiropractic care providers also provide general wellness care to their patients. Because a healthy spine means better overall bodily function, many chiropractic patients have regular adjustments even when they are not ill or injured. Doctors of chiropractic can also provide patients with valuable lifestyle counseling, including nutritional guidance, exercise plan help, and help with building healthy habits.

How Is a Chiropractic Evaluation Done?

The chiropractor will first take a medical history that will help him or her understand how a patient came to be at their current state of health. During the chiropractic evaluation, the chiropractor will ask the patient a series of questions about their current injury, illness or pain complaint. Patients will be asked to describe the location of pain, the intensity of the pain, and other details like whether the pain stays in one place or travels. The chiropractor will perform a hands-on exam while the patient lies comfortably on their stomach. During this gentle palpation, irregularities like damaged tissue and swelling can be found. In some cases, the chiropractor will order an X-ray or MRI imaging. These images can be helpful in diagnosis, especially since some injuries are not immediately evident from a physical exam.

What Is a Chiropractic Treatment Plan Like?

Chiropractic treatment plans will be unique to each patient. The chiropractor will typically begin with treatments scheduled from one to three times per week. The patient may have a treatment plan that lasts for several months, or they may only need a few weeks of treatment. Every patient is treated like the unique and special person that they are when determining treatment plans!
